My desk with my newer monitor and printer/scanner to the side. I can also now use a new Logitech Laser mouse without a pad. I had to replace the keyboard as well after spilling a drink on my old one.

My desk with my new monitor (and printer stand/file cabinet to the side).

This is my new desk. This picture's colours don't do it justice (they're really a quite rich honey colour). The brass handles were purchased second hand. Check out the IDE bays built into the desk.

The desk measures 1800 x 800 x 750mm and weighs a lot.

I and a cabinet-maker friend of mine designed this desk and he made it from re-cycled Rimu for me. It has two PC's in it, a non-directional bass speaker and all the attendant cables for it's network connections, printer, monitor speakers, cell phone charger and fax machine are hidden in a cable channel along it's back.

On the left is a drawer, a CD rack and small bookcase which has all my most used manuals in it.

With the right cabinet open you can see my two PC's and their IDE bays mounted in the desk. The PC on the left is a P4-1600 running Windows 2000. the left hand IDE drive is it's DVD (sitting on top of the box you can see the mouses radio station).

The PC on the right is a P3-900 running RedHat 7.3. The IDE on the right is a removable HD bay with a Dension DMP3 player plugged in to the Rehat box.

Behind the PC's is a digital KVM switch controlled from the keyboard so I can immediately switch between machines.

In these shots you get a better idea of how nice the wood is. These are the doors in the left and right side of the desk.

At the left is some storage where I'm keeping stationery for the printer and fax etc on top of the bass speaker. At the top of that picture you can see one end of the cable channel that the cables lead up to. They run along behind the desk and down into the right cabinet where you can see the current mess all of them make. The right hand door gives me easy access to the rear of my PC's. I have prepared shelves and mountings for tidying up the cabling but haven't got around to installing them yet.

I was using a cordless keyboard, and had plans for a second monitor on the other side of the wall you see, which is my living room. Both the keyboard and mouse would function from my couch - but I didn't like the performance of the keyboard enough to pursue the idea.

The idea was to make a cool work place with lots of room and all the right places to put PCs and their cables out of the way. I had to buy the flat panel monitor to go with the aesthetics. My PC's use quiet power supplies and have sound deadening material stuck on the inside of the cases so they run silently within the desk.

I made a blunder in the design - the gaps for threading cables weren't big enough for the bulk of some plugs and I had to cut edges of plastic of some to fit them in. And the wood on the front door to the PC's warped a little in the gentle baking of the PC's heat. I was surprised by that because the cabinet doesn't really get very warm. I did consider fitting cabinet fans in the rear but didn't bother - and my friend assures me it probably wouldn't have made a difference.
